I feel drawn to mormonism, yet have questions, please help

Hi all
I recently saw a PBSprogram on Mormons which prompted questions. I would love to get feedback on these!

on Tithing...
how is this 10% arrived at, is it on the honour system or do you have to show them pay stubs/tax returns? alot of churches have anon. envelopes...but I understand Mormons have meetings, does one need to provide figures?

I know the church does not provide public records of spending...does anyone know or suppose the LDS may actually fund the FLDS church they supposedly shun? -just how connected are the two?

on mysticism/magic
Joseph Smith used scrying & devining, how sympathetic is the church to others who have such abilities or utilize divination methods?

on family....
what if one does not want to be sealed to family? -for example my family of origin was quite abusive. On imediate family .....What if one's significant other is not Mormon, are you then shunned? Can you be sealed? Does it make a difference if this marriage happened before one converts? What if there is dispute on how/in what religion to raise the family? Does a woman really require her husband to "awaken" her in the spirit life/post mortem with a secret name?-if so what about the unwed....or is all that FLDS?

On freethinkers...
Is the church still anti feminism? How many working Moms (outside home) did you know of? How many people held a temple recomend that actually secretly (or overtly) had notions that challenged traditional gospel/ritual's interpretations/validity?

On temple...
is there an outer court/temple for newbies & an inner court/temple for adepts/longstanding faithful? The program I saw had so many regulations required for a temple recomend, to gain entrance.....but the temple neer me is keen to invite anyone in. -hence this incongruity created questions re. the nature of temple/worship/fellowship.

On sexuality....
Are gay people automatically ex-comunicated if they live an expression of their sexuality? Are married couples expected to only have procreative sex?

Ok thanks for your time & thanks for your participation.....I'm sure I'll have more questions, I'll post more as I think of them if you all don't mind?

It is official… as of this morning we got the letter saying that we are no longer members of church of Jesus Christ of later-day saints.

We actually have not been members for over 5 years now. I just took that long to get our names off the records. I was in the bishopric when we left. Turned my keys to the building and left them with there mouth open wide.

The letter states:

Dear Brother Lukas
This letter is to notify you that in accordance with your request, you are no longer a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Should you desire to become a member of the Church in the future, the local bishop or branch president in your area will be happy to help you.

Sincerely
Gregory W. Dodge.
Manager, Member, and Statistical Records.

Some history for the non-experienced. The Mormon Church does not remove you ever from the records unless you are ex-communicated or request it. Requesting it was known to be a challenge. They usually want you to come to a hearing so that you can hear all the bad things you are doing blah blah. Members that are on the membership list that are not active are known as inactive and are usually sent home teachers and missionaries until they become active again.

Now I feel like this is a milestone in my life. Why I am not sure. When we left because I was a member of the bishopric we were never harassed, never sent missionary’s, our home teachers visited like once. The only time we were ever called was if a new member didn’t know our scandalous history and they were running down the ward list calling for some church reason (feed the missionary’s, or something). When our home teachers came for the first time about a year ago... I though oh I should do something about this and promptly mailed in a removal request. Took a year but its done BABY!!!

So raise your glasses tonight to me being FREE from the hypocrisy of mans religion.

**disclaimer: Please do not take offense if you’re a Mormon or Christian of any sort I know and love all people no-mater what they believe or how they maybe misguided. If you are offended then it is only a matter of time before you see the light!!! Or is that the light given off from the fires of hades?
Did anyone see "Ex-Mormon Stripper" last weekend?

Hey all, I wondered if anyone checked out "The Almost True Adventures of an Ex-Mormon Stripper" in SF last weekend? What did you think?

I thought it was an excellent show, I may be a tiny bit biased, but the fact that there wasn't a dry eye in the house was a definite signal. This play made people laugh at absurdity, cry at tragedy, and be uplifted by courage and hope. It is a healing work and if you ever have a chance to see it, or to see it again, it carries my highest recommendation. Not bad for a one-act!

I was a Mormon once

Yes, it's true. I attended church for 3 hours every Sunday and was there at least a couple nights a week. I went to seminary every day in high school. I had to get up at 5:30 AM to do that shit. It took me forever to get over Mormon guilt. Now I'm drinking, smoking, taking drugs, fucking and generally rebelling for the first time in my life. It's so fucking good.

I was married at 21 to a non Mormon - thank goddess - but I was just running away from the reality of the shit my family put me through. I even went to BYU. Now I'm divorced and living the life of sin I was destined to live. But I'm done w/the guilt thing and really don't think of it as sin, just fun, my life. My life is fun and the Mormons can go on living as they live but I've found my own way.

Love, Recovering Mormon,
Mandy

Gosh it's good to see other have escaped the torment that is Utah.

It feels like the vortex of the Mormon strong hold likes to brings us all back to center on occasion. But fight on my brothers and sisters. Fight on.

Silly soap box I'm on today. Yay.

latter days

i went & saw that film "latter days" about the gay mormons.

mostly i went 'cos amber benson (the dearly departed tara of "buffy" fame) was a supporting actress & like some obsessive ex-boyfriend, i wanted to see tara -in some fashion- alive & well & continuing on...even as a foul-mouthed southern californian waitress.

anyway the movie was a cliched coming out story, but pretty acurate in terms of the mormmon lore. it's funny how i don't actually believe the church, but i'll rush to their defense if i see them portrayed inacurately. one of the missionaries, who seemed to be of mixed ethnicity, was a bigot & actually said during one of their lessons "god hates gays." i thought that was a touch audacious, but hey! - i was never a missionary & some of them probably *are* assholes.

they also excommunicated the son of a stake president for kissing another guy. is that all it takes these days?

oh, & they showed the dude strip out of his garments and you know what? they kinda *looked* like garments! except the bottom part was too tight.

are there any other mormon films out there besides "the godmakers"? has anybody seen that btw?
